El CBGP (UPM-INIA) abrirá sus puertas el 17 de mayo para celebrar este día y presentar su novedoso programa educativo “Food4All (F4A): Plantas para alcanzar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS-2030)”.
This year’s Fascination of Plants Day, a plant scientists’ initiative, has been already adopted by 47 countries worldwide. All information about this initiative can be accessed via www.plantday18may.org and is supported world-wide by a network of National Coordinators who voluntarily promote and disseminate the activity within their countries. This special day will put the fascinating world of plants itself in the spotlight: numerous activities on and around the Fascination of Plants Day, under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO — www.epsoweb.org) and the Global Plant Council, to recall to World Public that plant science is of critical significance to the social, environmental and economic landscape now and in future.
Plants are unique organisms and are essential to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs-2030) of the United Nations. Plants can produce sugars just from sunlight, carbon dioxide and water. This ability to directly synthesize their own food has enabled plants to successfully colonize, adapt to, and diversify within almost every niche on the planet and biologists estimate the total number of plant species to be about 250000. These abilities make plants the primary producers of biomass providing animals and mankind with food, feed, paper, medicine, chemicals, energy, and an enjoyable landscape. The Fascination of Plants Day covers all plant related topics including basic plant science, agriculture, horticulture & gardening, forestry, plant breeding, plant protection, food & nutrition, environmental conservation, climate change mitigation, smart bioproducts, biodiversity, sustainability, renewable resources, plant science education & art.
The CBGP (UPM-INIA) participates in Fascination of Plants Day by opening its doors and organising guided visits and presentations by Young Researchers of the centre. This activity is part of the novel outreach and educative CBGP (UPM-INIA) program “Food4All (F4A): Plant to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-2030)”. An additional example of CBGP-F4A activities is the recent participation of the CBGP in the “Intelligent Orchard: Genome” project with the Aula Ambiental of the Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) and Metro ligero. “Intelligent Orchard: Genome” is an educational initiative to teach students that plant science is of critical significance to the social, environmental and economic landscape now and in future, and that agriculture is a high-tech activity essential for our society.
About the CBGP:
The mission of the CBGP (UPM-INIA) is to carry out fundamental and strategic research in plant science and in microorganisms interacting with plants. The research is focused in understanding important biological process such as plant development, the interaction of plants with the environment and the mechanisms of plant nutrition. Additionally, the CBGP is interested in developing and using computational biology tools to achieve its goals. The acquired knowledge is used to tackle major problems of the agriculture and forestry, and to develop novel technological solutions. CBGP (UPM-INIA) has also an educational role and is a reference center for training scientists and Master's and Bachelor-level students in plant biotechnology and genomics. CBGP (UPM-INIA) has been recognized by the Spanish Research Agency as Centre of Excellence Severo Ochoa, the highest institutional recognition of scientific research excellence in Spain CBGP (UPM-INIA).
