The Spanish Research Agency, Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) presents periodically examples of significant grants that AEI founded in recent years.
In the latest weekly newsletter, AEI futures Centro de Biotecnología y Genómica de Plantas. CBGP was awarded Severo Ochoa Acknowledgement twice. The first time in 2016 call for the 4 years between 2017-2021 (SEV-2016-0672) and the second time was in the AEI call of 2020 for another 4 years 2022-2025 (CEX2020-000999-S).
The AEI article aims to highlight the work carried out by Spanish research centres and units that received the prestigious Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence accreditation and to promote some of their most outstanding projects. This time, they present Centro de Biotecnología y Genómica de Plantas, UPM-INIA/CSIC, and describe some of the initiatives and programs developed within the frame of Severo Ochoa like:
- CsBGP - Computational Systems Biology and Genomics program
- SynBIO2 - CBGP Synthetic Biology and Bioengineering of plants and associated microorganisms program
- TSPs y MISIONESCBGP – a cooperative scientific program between CBGP groups to face the challenges of plant biology and agricultural production
- CSPINT CBGP-CEPLAS and CBGP-CAS (CEPEI) - new international collaboration programs with research institutes of excellence In Germany and China
- CBGP-SOLUTIONS – program that allows accelerating the transfer of CBGP knowledge and innovation to contribute to more sustainable agriculture and to help solve food production challenges.

About the CBGP
The mission of CBGP (UPM-INIA/CSIC) is to conduct fundamental and strategic research in the field of plant biology and microorganisms that interact with plants. The research conducted by the different groups at the Center aims to understand, from a multidisciplinary perspective, essential processes such as plant development, plant interaction with the environment, and the molecular mechanisms that regulate plant nutrition. Additionally, CBGP (UPM-INIA/CSIC) develops new tools in computational biology and genomics, and develops and apply synthetic biology tools to achieve these objectives. Acquiring basic biological knowledge is essential to tackle the challenges faced by agricultural and forestry production and contribute to the development of new biotechnological solutions. CBGP (UPM-INIA/CSIC) also plays a significant role as an educational institution, serving as a reference center for the training of young scientists, as well as Master's and Bachelor's degree students in the areas of Plant Biotechnology and Genomics. CBGP is a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence and has received this excellence seal from the Ministry of Science and Innovation twice (2017-2021 and 2022-2025).
