CBGP (UPM-INIA) gets the P1 Biosafety Seal for all its main building labs

he CBGP (UPM-INIA) has recently receive the P1 Biosafety Seal for all the labs of its main whole domain. This accreditation is granted by the Spanish Interministerial Council of Genetically Modified Organisms (CIOMG), as the competent authority for authorizations related to the facilities (labs) and experimental activities with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

This accreditation makes the CBGP (UPM-INIA) the first Spanish research center that achieves the P1 Biosafety seal not only for one lab but also for the entire headquarters facilities and labs. It represents an important recognition to the biosafety procedures and work with GMOs in practice at the CBGP and a milestone within the 2021-2024 Centre’s Strategic Plan, which advocates for a safer workplace for better research and excellence.

The main building of the CBGP (UPM-INIA) has a 7.391 m2 of facilities and currently houses 32 research group labs with their respective adjacent offices as well as auxiliary facilities such as instrumentation rooms for inoculation and cultivation of plants and microorganisms, centrifugation, biochemical and molecular analysis, etc. Among the auxiliary labs and service facilities are included:

  1. Cell imaging and modelling lab
  2. Systems biology and modelling lab
  3. Microscopy service
  4. Metabolomics service
  5. Centralized washing and sterilization service
  6. Computational cluster KAIROS
  7. Microelements and nutrients analyses facility
  8. Anaerobic conditions experimentation facility
  9. Unidades de cultivo in vitro de células vegetales y células animales
  10. In vitro culture units for plant cells and animal cells

These recently accredited P1 biosafety facilities join the facilities with different levels of biosafety that the CBGP (UPM-INIA) already had:

  1. P2 (A/ES/12/I-03) facility with 200 m2 of greenhouses distributed in 5 compartment which allow working with GMOs (pants and associated organisms)
  2. P3 (A/ES/13/I-19) facility dedicated to work with quarantine pathogens and that has been used for the CBGP (UPM-INIA) COVID19 projects.

With this new recognition and improvement of the CBGP (UPM-INIA) facilities, the Centre goes one step forward in the implementation of measures for the improvement of its infrastructures and services and reaffirm itself on the path of excellence science and innovation.
