The CBGP (UPM-CSIC-INIA) is a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence, a benchmark in the field of plant biology and biotechnology. Among our fundamental objectives, the CBGP recognizes the strategic importance of sustainability as a crucial pillar for strengthening our scientific activities.

To be a leading research institute in sustainability in plant science that integrates environmentally friendly practices into all its scientific activities.

Our Mission
To incorporate sustainability into the management, research, training, and knowledge transfer developed by CBGP staff, we aim to reduce our environmental footprint while maximizing the positive impact of science on society.

Key Strategic Objectives

1. Governance and leadership in sustainability through the creation of institutional structures and policies.
2. Energy and water efficiency. To this end, we are working to reduce electricity, water, and other consumption through the use of clean and efficient technologies and best practices.
3. Sustainable waste management through (1) reducing waste generation and (2) ensuring proper waste management.
4. Sustainable purchasing, logistics, and mobility. Integrating sustainable criteria into the procurement of materials and instruments, and promoting the use of public and sustainable transportation for CBGP staff.
5. Training and raising awareness among the CBGP community on environmental sustainability issues.
6. Finally, monitoring and auditing the best practices implemented through an annual evaluation system.

Priority Lines of Action

1. Annual energy and water consumption audits - monthly responsible: Luis Vicente Vicente (UPM).
2. Waste management review - responsible: Alejandro Bravo.
3. Implementation of energy efficiency and risk optimization measures.
4. Staff awareness and training in sustainability.
5. Publication of an annual sustainability report with key indicators.

The CBGP's sustainability plan strengthens our commitment to environmental sustainability, integrating it as a cross-cutting principle into our mission of scientific excellence and knowledge transfer, thereby building a more sustainable and innovative future.
