Crisanto Gutierrez

Prof. Crisanto Gutierrez is Head of the Program in Genome Dynamics and Function at the Centro de Biologia Molecular Severo Ochoa CSIC-UAM in Madrid (Spain). He obtained his PhD (1980) from Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (1980) and after a postdoc at Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas (CSIC), he was Assistant Professor of Cell Biology (1982-1986) at the University of Alcala de Henares. Then, he carried out research in the Dept. of Biological Chemistry (Harvard Medical School, Boston) and Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, before establishing his laboratory in 1992 at the Centro de Biologia Molecular Severo Ochoa. He has carried out research on plant geminiviruses and cell division that led to the discovery of plant retinoblastoma protein. He is currently interested in understanding the links between cell division, genome replication and chromatin under normal and stress conditions. He has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant (2019) and received the Premio Carmen y Severo Ochoa (2008). He was elected Member of European Molecular Biology Organization (1998), of Real Academia de Medicina y Cirugia de Cadiz (2009) and of Academia Europaea (2020), and is now member of the EMBO Council (2020). He is editor of Plant J, EMBO J and EMBO Rep.
